Difference Between Saber and Conocer (Conjugations)

Definition of Conocer

Have in-depth information or knowledge and direct experience about something.

Definition of Saber

A set of broad and deep knowledge acquired through study or experience.

Difference between Saber and Conocer

The difference is:

Conocer: Be familiar with a person or a place.

Saber: Related to the knowledge of a fact or information. Having the ability to do things.

When to use Conocer 

You can use this verb in three different ways: 

1. When you have had previous contact with a person or place

• Conozco a Pedro (I know Pedro)
• ¿Conoces a Sandra? (Do you know Sandra?/Have you met Sandra?)

2. When we’ve already visited a place

• Diego conoce un buen lugar para comer (Diego knows a good place to eat)
• Conozco un museo que te encantará (I know a museum that you’ll love)

3. When you meet someone for the first time

• Encantado de conocerte (Nice to meet you)
• Conocí a un hermano ayer (I met a brother yesterday)

When to use saber

1.  Learned skills

• ¿Sabes nadar?  (Can you swim?)
• ¿Sabes cantar) (Can you sing?)  

2.  Information

• ¿Sabes si Angélica tiene hijos? (Do you know if Angelica has children?)
• ¿Sabes si mañana hay clases? (Do you know if there’s a class tomorrow?)
